Best PEO Lists: We Publish One Only When the Data Justifies It
We are not publishing a "best PEO" ranking yet, and we will not invent one. A ranked list is only worth something when every provider on it has cleared the data gate — sourced fields, current records, a published rubric and a named reviewer. Until a ranked list can be defended, this page says so and points to what we do publish.
What the search results should not make you trust
best peo companies and best peo for small business return lists that sound like verdicts. Almost all of them are assembled from marketing copy: the providers pay the most, or play best with the coordinator, or have the biggest brand team. Nothing on this page is a ranking, and we want to be entirely uncomfortable claiming one before the evidence exists. That discomfort is the product.
What we do publish
| Asset | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Provider directory | Every tracked provider, field by field, each sourced or marked unverified | Live |
| Head-to-head comparisons | Two providers on the same fields, one canonical direction | Live (drafts until records clear) |
| The scoring rubric | The weights and evidence rules a future ranking would use | Live |
| Cost and pricing guides | How to get quotes you can actually compare | Live |
The ranked list slot above is reserved. When the first provider records clear the gate in numbers, this page will grow the specific lists buyers search for — best for small business, best for startups, best by industry — each one linked score-by-score to the methodology, each one refresh-dated, and none of them paid for. Providers cannot buy a place on any list we publish.
What a "best" list will look like when it exists
- Every provider on the list has cleared the data gate within the refresh
window.
- Every score links to the evidence behind it — the source URL and the
verification date.
- The ranking methodology, weights and review cadence are published and
versioned.
- The list has a visible last-updated date and a changelog.
Until all four hold, honesty is the feature.

Frequently asked
Why no "best PEO" list?
Because a ranking is a score, and a score without a published, evidence-linked rubric is advertising. The providers we track do not yet have enough verified data to rank defensibly, so a ranked list would be a guess with a heading — the thing this site exists to criticise.
What would a ranked list require?
Every provider on it would need to have cleared the four-part gate: sourced structured fields, page-specific prose, a differentiating element and a named reviewer sign-off — and the ranking itself would have to link every score to the methodology rubric.
What do you publish instead of a ranking?
A provider directory where every field is sourced or explicitly unverified, head-to-head comparisons built from those records, and the published rubric that a future ranking would use. Those three are worth more to a buyer than a numbered list built on marketing copy.
When will the first ranked list appear?
When enough provider records clear the data gate that a list can be honest. The gate is not a deadline on a calendar; it is a count of verified fields. The moment the data supports it, the list publishes itself, with the methodology link beside every score.
