Employee Benefits Through a PEO
Under a PEO, your employees enrol in the provider's master benefit plans - which is where most of the value lives. Small employers get large-group style plans and rates; the trade is less plan design control and benefits that follow the PEO's calendar.
How master plans work
The PEO maintains medical, dental, vision, life and disability plans across its whole client base. Your staff join those plans under the co-employment arrangement. The pooling is the product: a ten-person company buys into risk pools sized like a thousand-person one.
| Aspect | Standalone small group | Through a PEO |
|---|---|---|
| Plan choice | Carrier menus for your size | PEO's master plan lineup |
| Rates | Your own census drives renewal | Pooled experience smooths swings |
| Contribution rules | Yours to set within carrier limits | Within PEO's framework |
| Renewal calendar | Yours | Theirs |
What you still decide
Contribution levels usually flex within bounds, participation requirements apply as with any group plan, and which plan tiers to offer remains a real choice. What you lose is bespoke design - unusual plan features or specific carrier relationships do not transfer.
The exit question
Benefits end when the arrangement ends. Staff moving off a PEO re-enrol in new plans mid-year, with qualifying-event windows that must be handled correctly. Get exit mechanics written into the agreement; see termination clauses and how PEOs manage health insurance.

Frequently asked
Are PEO benefit plans cheaper?
Often for small groups, because pooled risk and volume pricing beat standalone small-group rates. Compare total cost including the admin fee.
Can employees keep their doctors?
Depends on the master plan network, not on your old carrier. Verify provider access before switching mid-treatment.
